TOTAL PRODUCTIVE MAINTENANCE (TPM)

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a series of methods, originally pioneered by Nippondenso (a member of the Toyota group), to ensure every machine in a production process is always able to perform its required tasks so that production is never interrupted. TPM is intended to ensure takt time is met; it's a common sense approach to maximizing equipment availability (up time), part quality, and safety. TPM requires the participation of all operations personnel – operators, maintenance personnel and management. It relies on reacting to equipment breakdowns at the moment of occurrence, asking the 5 Why's to discover the root cause and correcting the problem so it never happens again. Also relies on both operators and maintenance personnel performing preventive / predictive maintenance to prevent, discover, and correct equipment deterioration.
